Filling the Dead Space

Throughout your day, what do you fill the dead space with?
The silence? The time when there is no conversation. Do you fill it with music?
With the news? With a TV show that you don't really pay attention to, but have going in the background?

My "dead space" is often filled with things that are less than what they could be. I have been convicted of this lately. I regularly fill the dead air in our house with the TV, or my most recent obsession the sound track from "The Greatest Showman." (Seriously though...best new musical in a LONG time. I highly recommend!)

In all of this, I have noticed something with my kids. They start to reflect whatever it is I am watching or listening to. This means my three year old has been walking around the house singing, "Never Enough" which is totally not the message I want sinking into her little heart. If you give the song a listen you will know what I am talking about.

I am consciously making the effort to begin filling the dead space in our house with other options. I have been listening to sermons from John Piper and Albert Mohler. I have found a few other podcasts that are good for my mommy heart and help bring me closer to my goals of focusing our lives on Christ more.

It is not an easy thing to be intentional about what is being seen and heard in my house. I want my children to reflect a house that is full of Jesus. I want my husband to come home to a house that is filled with peace and not chaos...very rare these days.
If I want this, I must be intentional.

I want God's word to be a part of our everyday.
The Bible tells us a lot about how we should focus on His word and make sure that it is a part of our daily lives.

Deuteronomy 6: 6-7
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

God's Word was the topic of my Bible study a couple of weeks ago. We all talked about different ways we can be sure to incorporate God's word into our homes and lives. I love my Bible study group because we are such a diverse group of women. We have the young moms, and soon to be moms, those who are kind of in the middle, and those who have more life experience. The beauty of this group is that we get perspectives from everyone! And each one is so valuable.

SO...here a few of the ways that have stuck with me to keep God's word flowing in the dead space in my home and heart.
  • Listening to Christian podcasts of sermons or devotionals when getting ready for the day.
  • Playing Christian music in the car. This is difficult for some people, but I promise there is a genre of Christian music for everyone! You just have to find it.
  • Listening to the Bible on Audible or other listening service for books.
These are just three ideas that are easy to implement and they help me
to fill that time that we have nothing else, with things that are God honoring.

I struggle with this daily, and I know I am not alone in this...well I hope not anyways!
I want to be intentional with what I and my children hear.
Things like the soundtrack from "The Greatest Showman" (I LOVE this movie!)
and other types of media are good in moderation.

Maybe it is time to lay down the good for the best?

Thanks for reading and sharing!
Leave me a comment with your ideas to fill the "dead space."

Give this song a listen. My kids love to blast this through our house whenever they can!
I love when this fills my house!
