Rejoice! Sunday is Coming!
Good Friday.
If you lived this day, 2,000 plus years ago, you would probably wonder
what could have been good about it.
How could it possibly be good to watch the man,
who you knew was the Savior of the world, die.
Not just any death, but the death of a criminal.
Not just any criminal, but the vilest of criminals.
How could there EVER be ANYTHING good about that?
I love how God works. He sent Jesus to die for our sins.
The disciples were scared and confused this day. They were hiding and broken.
They felt that the light they had found in the world was gone.
We know that the story didn't end on Friday.
We know that on Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead!
We know that this day was necessary. It was needed to give us direct access to God.
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.
Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom,
the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.
Matthew 27: 50-51
This is one of the most significant things that happened that dark day.
If you do not know the history of the Temple in the Jewish culture, it is easy to overlook this.
In the Temple, there is this place called the Holy of Holies.
It is the place that the High Priest would enter once a year, on the Day of Atonement,
to present the people's sacrifices to God.
This is where the Spirit of God resided.
This would be the payment or atonement for their sins.
You or I, as normal people, would bring our doves, lamb, or bull to the priests.
They would then go before God on our behalf for us to be forgiven of our sins.
We did not have access to God directly.
The curtain, or more commonly known, the veil of the temple, was twelve inches thick.
It was woven with the finest of fabrics, and had precious metals interwoven in it.
This was more like a wall. Not a thin piece of fabric.
This wall was TORN! Ripped from TOP to BOTTOM!
Jesus died, and we could access God directly.
Praise God for the darkest day!
Praise God that He made a way for us to be with Him!
We do not have to go through anyone else to hear His voice.
Our sin can be forgiven once and for all time, if we just ask!
This is the significance of these verses.
God, Himself, tore that curtain. No one else could.
I am thankful for the darkness that this day represents.
I am joyful because I know that Sunday,
we get to celebrate that Jesus pulled off the greatest April Fools joke of all time!
He rose from the dead!
This is truly a Good Friday!
